Barry Pickersgill

Barry Pickersgill trained at Leeds College of Art and Cambridge College of Art before a career as a painter, graphic artist, cartoonist and illustrator. He is well known for his work on major TV productions and films including Harry's Game, The Tube, Countdown and The Good Companions series. He was the regular cartoonist on news and current affairs on YTV. His work features in the collections of, among others, a former Prime Minister, a champion boxer, an England cricketer and a major merchant bank. His latest work features his home city of Leeds and the nearby towns of Harrogate and York. His depictions of the city at night have proven particularly popular. “I paint the towns and cities,” Barry Pickersgill says “and if it’s raining and dark then that’s a bonus”. This is what he has now become known for – urban landscapes with rain, plenty of people and lights which give a stunning effect and instantly attract admirers. He paints slowly and meticulously, giving great attention to detail, but his paintings are not just depictions of buildings, they are alive with movement and light.

His Yorkshire roots have also led him to produce a series of humorous paintings under the general title of “Dales folk”. He draws on his experience as a cartoonist to produce these tongue-in-cheek depictions of an elderly couple living in the Dales.
