Interview with artist Catherine McGrath on the opening day of the exhibition ‘Yorkshire… The Green And Grit
Catherine McGrath
Born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, Catherine McGrath was brought up in West Yorkshire. She took early retirement from her career as a Languages Lecturer in Further Education to concentrate on her art. She has pursued various creative interests throughout her life including textiles, pottery and sculpture, all of which influence her work. She has exhibited at a number of art shows and galleries in Yorkshire and in Southern France.
Catherine works mainly in acrylics, using collage and impasto techniques to create
texture and depth. Subject matter includes florals, village-
Influences include Matisse and Gauguin, Matisse for the sweep of his drawings, the rich patterned imagery of his paintings, Gauguin for his use of bold, exotic colour. A further influence is the organic, flowing lines of the Art Nouveau movement, the aesthetic beauty in Art Nouveau design.
