Rosemary Abrahams

Rosemary Abrahams has been a painter for many years, focusing entirely on canvas with acrylic. Rosemary works rapidly, usually on several canvases concurrently, giving rise to a 'series' or group of paintings where a particular concept is explored thoroughly. Her current range of pieces includes landscapes, seascapes, what she refers to as her ‘florals’ which are rich in colour and full of vitality. Rosemary originally studied painting at Leeds College of Art in the 60’s and has been painting ever since, with her style gradually progressing to exploration of Yorkshire with a degree of abstraction. Influences throughout Rosemary’s life have included Ben Nicholson, Terry Frost, The St Ives School, Matisse from the French Impressionists, the New York Expressionists – Rothko especially and Rauchenburg and continues the tradition of abstract expressionism into today’s art world. Her paintings are produced on a wide range of canvasses from 2 metres plus to intimate pieces no more than 20cm square. The surface of the work is enriched by the use of a thick plaster ground, which can be incised to create line work, which then permits the application of both colour washes and saturated colour. The paintings are further enriched by the application of metal foils and pearlescent pigments.
